Windows 7: SearchIndexer.exe taking lots of Resources

windows features

On my Windows 7 machine a process named SearchIndexer.exe was having it’s way with my processors.

Windows Search was on?! No thank you to Windows search. To get rid of this process you have to remove Windows Search, and here’s how you do it.

  1. Click Start -> Control Panel
  2. Click Programs
  3. Click Turn Windows features On or Off
  4. You’ll see this window:

    windows features

  5. Uncheck that box next to Windows Search
  6. Click ok

If you have Windows XP:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Run and type services.msc
  3. Find “windows search” service
  4. Click and select stop from the left hand side
  5. Right click it and select properties
  6. Change the startup type for this service as disabled

I was lhesitant to turn this feature off since I am not sure what else Windows is using it for. I did however exclude every file or folder that was being searched and indexed. Performance problem solved.

I miss the quick search, but as infrequently as I use it, Google Search of the desktop is fast enough
